Kobie Smith is an Indigenous journalist, News Reporter, and On-air Host with CFNR in Terrace B.C., and is one of the newest Hereditary Chief’s for the Salmon Clan. Smith’s Hereditary Chief name is Hemajalas.

He was born and raised in Kitimat BC graduated high school in 2019, and at a very young age he knew he wanted to become a sports broadcaster. 

But before he could chase his dream, he got a job in 2020 on the LNG site in Kitimat, but Smith knew staying in his hometown he could not chase his dream so he applied to BCIT and was in Broadcast & Online Journalism Program.

Kobie moved to Burnaby in 2021, to attend school, as he is very passionate about sports, also loves to connect with new people. 

After his first year he went back to his hometown in the summer of 2022, taking the skills he learned to CFNR a radio station in Terrace B.C., where he worked there for six weeks and was able to work more on his skills how to talk on the radio and public speaking. 

At the end of the six weeks he was able to broadcast live at a basketball tournament in Terrace B.C., after that he knew he had his family behind his back cheering him on to go chase his dream. 

Kobie has graduated from BCIT in 2024, and is hoping to inspire other Indigenous youth that they can go chase their dreams, and no matter what their families are so proud of them. 

Smith has also broadcasted Basketball tournaments at the All Native Basketball Tournament and also the Junior All Native Basketball Tournament with CFNR. Kobie has been broadcasting with CFNR at ANBT for four years now and two years for JANT.
